Vet!lika<br />

Vet!lika [dial.; cp. Epic & Class. Sk. vait!lika] a certain office or occupation at court connected with music<br />

or other entertainment, a bard. With other terms in list at Miln 331, some of them obscure and regional.<br />

Also at J vi.277, where expld as "vet!l! [read vett!ya?] u&&h!pake," i. e. those whose duty it is [by vet!la or<br />

vetta] to make (people] rise. <strong>The</strong> expln is obscure, the u&&h!paka reminds of Bdhgh's u&&h!pana (under<br />

vet!la). Kern misunderstands the phrase by translating "chasing bards away."<br />

Veti<br />

Veti [vi+eti, of i; Sk. vyeti] to go away, disappear, wane S iii.135; A ii.51; J iii.154; DhsA 329. Cp.<br />

vyavay!ti.<br />

Vetulla<br />

Vetulla (& vetulya) [cp. *Sk. vaitulya; also called vai- pulya, fr. vipula. <strong>The</strong> P. form is not clear; it probably<br />

rests on dial. trsln of a later term] a certain dissenting sect (see Mhvs. trsln 259, n. 2) in ˚v!da heretic<br />

doctrine Mhvs 36, 41; Dpvs 22, 45; -- ˚v!din an adherent of this doctrine.<br />

Vetta<br />

Vetta (nt.) [cp. Epic Sk. vetra] twig, rod; creeper; jungle- rope (cp. ve*u -- da*.a); cane (calamus). By itself<br />

only in standard list of punishments (tortures): vettehi t!)eti to flog with canes, e. g. A i.47; ii.122; Miln<br />

Veda<br />

Veda [fr. vid, or more specifically ved as P. root] 1. (cp. vediyati & vedan!) (joyful) feeling, religious<br />

feeling, enthusiasm, awe, emotion, excitement (something like sa'vega) D ii.210 (˚pa&il!bha+somanassa --<br />

enthusiasm for the truth (for the letter & the spirit) of Buddha's teaching M i.37; A v.329 sq., 333, 349, 352;<br />

veda here interpreted as "somanassa'" at MA i.173. -- See also cpd. ˚j!ta. -- 2. (cp. vedeti & vijj!) (higher)<br />

knowledge (as "Buddhist" antithesis to the authority of the "Veda"), insight, revelation, wisdom: that which<br />

Bdhgh at MA i.173 defines with "ñ!*a," and illustrates with vedag( of Sn 1059; or refers to at DA i.139<br />

with defn "vidanti eten! ti vedo." Thus at Sn 529 & 792 (=ved! vuccanti cat(su maggesu ñ!*a' paññ! Nd1<br />

93), cp. SnA 403. -- As adj. veda Ep. of the Buddha "the knower" or the possessor of revelation, at M i.386.<br />

<strong>The</strong> latter formula is frequent in stock phrase describing the accomplishments of a Brahmin, e. g. at D i.88;<br />

M ii.133; Sn 1019; A i.163; DhA iii.361. In the older texts only the 3 Vedas (irubbeda=Rg; yaju˚ & s!ma˚)<br />

are referred to, whereas later (in the Commentaries) we find the 4 mentioned (athabbana added), e. g. the<br />

three at S iv.118; J i.168; ii.47; iii.537; Miln 10; Vism 384; the four at DA i.247; Miln 178. -- Unspecified<br />

(sg.): SnA 462. As adj. veda "knowing the Vedas" SnA 463 (ti˚), cp. tevijja. -- <strong>The</strong> Vedas in this<br />

connection are not often mentioned, they are almost identical with the Mantras (see manta) and are often<br />

(in Com.) mentioned either jointly with manta or promiscuously, e. g. Pv ii.613 (the Vedas with the 6<br />

angas, i. e. ved!ngas, called manta); SnA 293 (manta -- p!rag(+veda -- p!rag(), 322, 448. -- antagu "one<br />

who has reached the end of knowledge," i. e. one who has obtained perfection in wisdom Vin i.3; Sn 463. --<br />

g( one who has attained to highest knowledge (said of the Buddha). Thus different from "ti**a' ved!na'
