THE DESIGN OF SURGERY ROOM AND POST-ANESTHESIA CARE UNIT
Abstract
In this study, it was aimed to examine the ideal design recommendation by studying the design forms
of operating room and post anesthesia care units in abroad and our country in accordance with changing
health concepts and social health needs in these forms.
In these days, operation rooms are complex units containing all surgical units requiring collaboration
among occupational groups in which number of employees is high. The efforts of being designed of
the future’s more modern surgery rooms showing parallel with new requirements, changing concepts
and technological developments are in progress today. Many health centers are now experiencing the
process of the construction of new operating room, reconstruction of the old ones or transforming the
existing areas into outpatient surgical centers.
Operating rooms are one of the most important entries of hospitals regarding revenues and expenditures.
While around % 40 of the prices doesn’t return to hospitals, operating rooms are liable for paying
up to % 70 of the hospital revenue. Distinguishing between septic and aseptic in the hospitals is very
important in terms of the safety of the staff and patients. Proper designing of the operating rooms will
help simplify the circulation and improve the performance in the operating room.
In order to create hygienic environments in the hospitals, architectural design and the structure components
used in the design are very important in creating such environments. We believe that providing
that we create functional sites which comply with the international operating room standards, our national
needs and the legislation of Ministry of Health by bringing structure components together; it will
be contribute to remove health-threating elements. Proper architectural planning, correctly analysed
mechanical system, hereby, provide hygienic environments. Hospital planning and project preparation
is an interdisciplinary technical branch. During this planning period, mechanical designers, doctors
and hospital management should work together with the architect.
Hospitals plan their operating room units according to the extent of their service. While no problem
occurs if the planned operating room is built in an entirely unoccupied area; during the renovation
of the obsolete application areas, some crucial difficulties occur owing to such restraints as technical
compatibility problems of the beams-columns, electricity, water, expenses etc.
In recent years, the frequency and extent of the cases due to hospital infection is known the public and
the cause and effect relations of these cases are highly important. The sensitivity of the subject matter
requires as much proficiency in design and application as the high level of operating culture. For the
right solution of the problem, in every process of the construction: as of the gestation of the project, by
