feast
STEPHEN M. LEBRUTO, USA
Feasts include sumptuous or elaborate meals, often
with entertainment. Religious feast days are
communal celebrations and have often become
public holidays or festivals. Feasts commemorate a
significant event, mark the passage of seasons,
honour a deity, or allow participants to commune
ritually with gods or ancestors see ritual). They
might also display status through conspicuous
consumption. Food festivals are a modern
version. These all potentially act as tourism
attractions.
feminism
feminism 225
TURGUT VAR, USA
Feminism covers a number of philosophical positions
which question gender inequalities and
exploitation in tourism-related work opportunities,
leisure and representation, as well as the masculinist
discourse of tourism research. Activist organsisations
and academics that monitor tourism
prostitution or analyse sexist images in advertising
are examples of feminist praxis in tourism, with the
goal of changing local practices in a global industry.
