Pacific Asia Travel Association<br />

The Pacific Asia Travel Association was founded as<br />

a not-for-profit agency in Hawaii in 1951. PATA<br />

was established to promote the Pacific Asia region's<br />

destinations and to provide information, research,<br />

education and training programmes for its<br />

members. Organisationally, it is divided into four<br />

divisions, Pacific, Asia, Europe and Americas, with<br />

chapters located in many countries. Its membership<br />

consists of more than 2,100 worldwide tourism<br />

establishments, including over 100 government,<br />

state and city tourism bodies, and such tourism<br />

businesses as hotels, airlines and cruise lines.<br />

Additionally, its chapters have some17,000 tourism<br />

representatives as their members. Major activities<br />

of the association and its chapters include regional<br />

and international conferences, educational and<br />

promotional workshops, its Travel Mart which<br />

brings buyers and sellers together, and publication<br />

of documents supporting its goals. PATA's headquarters<br />

was recently moved from San Francisco to<br />

Bangkok, Thailand.<br />

reflect a common outlook in international relationships.<br />

Initiated in Japan in the 1960s as a response<br />

to world trade focus, including tourism, shifting<br />

East Asia, the term incorporates the United<br />

States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand,<br />

Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, South<br />

Korea, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Brunei,<br />

the Philippines and Thailand.<br />

Pacific Tourism Review<br />

Pacific Tourism Review deals with changes in outbound<br />

and inbound tourism patterns occurring<br />

in the wider Pacific area and their associated effects<br />

on the region's economies and environments. A<br />

refereed interdisciplinary journal, it aspires to<br />

advance excellence in tourism research, promote<br />

high-level education and nourish cultural awareness<br />

in various tourism sectors by integrating<br />

industry and academic perspectives. First appearing<br />

in 1997, it is published quarterly by Cognizant<br />

Communication Corporation �ISSN 1088±4157).<br />
