World Travel and Tourism
Council
The World Travel and Tourism Council WTTC)
is made up of chief executive from all sectors of the
tourism industry, including accommodation,
catering, cruises, entertainment, recreation,
transportation and travel-related services. Its
central goal is to work with governments to realise
the full economic impact of tourism. Its millennium
vision is to make tourism a strategic economic and
employment priority, to move towards open and
competitive markets, to pursue sustainable
development, and to eliminate barriers to
growth. Its headquarters are located in Brussels,
Belgium.
World Wide Web
The World Wide Web WWW) is one of the most
important information services on the Internet.
Based on the concept of hyperlinks, the WWW
integrates information that is stored on different
computers all over the world. Its pages can
combine text, graphics, sounds, movie clips,
database-queries, forms and many other multimedia
components.
The basic element of the WWW is simple text
files that describe the content of the page in
hypertext markup language HTML). These webpages
are stored on a computer on the Internet
that runs a Web server, a programme that allows
users to access the stored information. When a
Web client, another computer programme running
on an Internet-connected computer which might
be thousands of miles away, requests this page, the
Web client loads it from disk and sends it via the
network to the requesting programme. It is the
responsibility of the client programme to interpret
the embedded HTML tags and to display the page
accordingly. Because of this, the designer of the
page does not have full control over the appearance
of the page. HTML is a standard that is under
development and is evolving rapidly.
The WWW derives much of its appeal and
flexibility from the Uniform Resource Locator
URL), a general scheme for addressing resources
on the Internet. The URL defines the type of the
resource, its name, the path, and the computer
where it can be found. By specifying its URL, a
webpage can refer in a hyperlink to any other
publicly available resource on the Internet.
The capabilities of the World Wide Web are
dramatically expanded by use of Common Gateway
Interface CGI) scripts and Java applets. They
add dynamics to the structure of webpages.
Through CGI, a user can start programmes on
the server computer and thus see different pages
depending on several factors such as the content of
a database or the time of the day. Java applets are
small programmes that are delivered by the server,
but run on the computer of the user. Through this
WWW system, much trade and research-oriented
tourism data and publications are now readily
available.
