The analysis of the experimental data demonstrated that to some extent our assumption turned out to be true. A considerable number of between-language reactions received at each stage of the two experiments prove extensive interrelation and interaction of the two lexical systems in the direction from the L2 to the L1. It shows that in our participants’ mental lexicons the between-language links very often prove to be stronger than the within-language ones; this fact determines the between-language activation occurrence. On the other hand even the initial stage of the L2 acquisition (Experiment 1a) does not exclude the stimulus’ spreading activation within the L2 lexical system and retrieving another L2 word related to the former semantically or otherwise. Along with the increase in the L2 profi ciency we can observe a considerable strengthening and expansion of the within-language links which makes withinlanguage activation possible. By the fi nal stage of our research (Experiments 2d and 2e with the advanced-level participants) the number of within-language associations begins to prevail over the between-language ones, although the latter are by no means fully substituted or replaced by the former. Thus having studied a considerable period of the L2 class acquisition we come to the conclusion that the L2 lexical activation is a complicated dynamic process changing along with the progress in studies. Its type to a great extent depends on the language profi ciency level of an individual: low profi ciency level mostly implies “language-specifi c” activation in the direction from the L2 to the L1. The increase in the profi ciency level leads to a gradual switch over to the “language-independent” activation - a case when an L2 stimulus is able to spread activation to both lexical systems known to the individual and, therefore, to retrieve either an L1 or an L2 reaction with a relatively equal probability. This fact argues that both link types become, so to say, competitive: obviously the between-language and the within-language links of foreign words within the limits of the unifi ed lexical network are able to exist parallel and do not prove to be mutually exclusive. Therefore the general tendency of the L2 lexical activation formation proceeds in the direction from the “language-specifi c” (L2 lexical item → L1 lexical item) to the “language-independent” one (L2 lexical item → L1/L2 lexical item). We have also discovered certain peculiar features of the L2 word associative structure formation. The participants’ associative reactions demonstrate that this structure is formed by stages, in which process both quantitative and qualitative changes occur. On the one hand, along with the progress in the L2 studies we observe numerical growth and expansion of the L2 word associative fi eld (the number of various associations to one and the same stimulus increases considerably); on the other hand, the associations’ types change noticeably. Thus the initial stage of the L2 acquisition implies a great majority of the so-called “formal” reactions which prove that the L2 lexical item is processed at the surface (graphic-phonological) level of the mental lexicon. In this case the phonetic/graphic characteristics of the word turn out to be most signifi cant for its introducing and securing in the mental lexicon system. The following stages are characterized by the stimuli more frequent processing at the deep-laid semantic level of the mental lexicon, when an L2 word meaning becomes the basis for its linking. The main conclusion we have come to is, therefore, that an L2 word can be processed differently at different levels of the individual’s L2 profi ciency. The general tendency of the changes occurring lies in the direction from “language-specifi c” to “language-independent” lexical activation as well as from the surface (formal) level of the mental lexicon to the deeplaid (semantic) one.
