FOME EM BRASIL: UM ESTUDO ANTROPOLóGICO

Resumo: Este é um estudo etnográfico sobre a fome crônica em
um bairro popular da cidade do Salvador, Brasil. A fome crônica é
resultante da extrema desigualdade socioeconômica e possui distintos
significados no contexto social e no mundo particular das
pessoas que vivenciam este fenômeno no cotidiano. O estudo analisa
significados e valores simbólicos da fome pelos famintos. Para
eles, a fome é um ente externo ao corpo, um fantasma horripilante
que ameaça a vida. Do biológico ao cultural, a fome é analisada
com recursos da hermenêutica e da semiótica, para compreender
os sentidos de viver esta condição no dia-dia.

Abstract: This is an ethnographic study about chronic hunger in a
poor neighborhood of the city of Salvador, Brazil. Chronic hunger
results from the extreme socioeconomic inequality and has different
meanings within the social context and the private world of people
who experience this phenomenon in everyday life. The study examines
meanings and symbolic values of these who experience hunger.
For them, hunger is an entity external to the body, a horrifying lifethreatening
ghost. From a biological to cultural approach, hunger
is analyzed with the resources of hermeneutics and semiotics, to
understand the meaning of living with this condition day by day.
