there social factors which are influencing obesity as well as biological
factors, such as the mismatch between modern and evolutionary
environments?
The British public appear to be eating more however, the reality
and causation of changes in consumption remains unclear. There
could be many possible explanations for the increase in consumption
levels including increased food waste, more instances of consumption
per person, per day or consumption of larger portions when
eating. Building on this, an explorative study was conducted which
aimed to focus upon one of these scenarios and identify whether
people believed that increases in portion size were occurring and
how this may affect obesity levels. The research aimed to establish
public perceptions of portion size and how they conceived them to
be related to obesity. The findings of this qualitative research will be
the proceeding discussion.
Methodology
This study adopted a mixed methodological approach, consisting of a
survey, a focus group and the creation of threads on internet website
forums.
A small, explorative survey was conducted with a total of 24 participants,
14 of whom were males and 10 were females. The sample
was drawn from three different social groups: a youth club, a church
group and a day centre for the elderly. The reason these groups were
selected was because they were deemed to be representative of different
generations with the intention of allowing the opinions and
perceptions of different age groups to be represented. The survey
consisted of a combination of open ended and closed questions and
addressed the topics of perception of changing portion sizes, attitude
towards changing portion sizes (which followed the second topic, so
as not to be leading) and personal dietary habits.
