According to the GHCDF, when the Fellow Crafts of King Solomon's time
went to receive their wages, they ascended the winding staircase, whose steps are
illustrative of discipline and doctrine, as well as of natural, mathematical, and
metaphysical science. The Freemason, in the Second Degree, "should pause on
each alternate step, and consider the several stages of his progress, as well as the
important lessons which are there inculcated." 390
