Algunas patologías y discapacidades concretas requieren especial dedicación durante la noche. Aunque el porcentaje de cuidadores que provee cuidado durante las horas de la noche es reducido, refleja la realidad imprevisible y exigente del cuidado: se hace frente a tareas inaplazables como administrar medicación, ayudar a ir al baño o atender cualquier otra demanda de la persona dependiente. El 8,7% de los cuidadores provee cuidado entre las 00:00h y las 07:00h. Este porcentaje es del 12,3% entre las hijas/os/yernos/nueras y del 6,3% entre los cónyuges. No se observaron diferencias significativas según estado de salud y nivel de discapacidad de la persona cuidada, ni según características del cuidador. En esta línea, Rivera Navarro (1999a: 313) encontró que entre el 26 y el 40% de los mayores con demencia que contaban con cuidadores informales reciben atención durante la noche, y que la existencia de cuidado nocturno es una de las variables que más explican la intensidad de la carga del cuidador. En el ámbito internacional, Casey halló que en Canadá el 13% de los cuidadores sufre algún impacto en el tiempo dedicado a dormir por causa del cuidado (Casey, 2004). FIGURA 8.5. LA VIDA COTIDIANA DE LOS CUIDADORES: EL TIEMPO EXPROPIADO 0:00 1:00 2:00 3:00 4:00 5:00 6:00 Las encuestas sobre uso del tiempo, entre ellas la EET, permiten ampliar la visión del análisis de una actividad concreta, como es el cuidado informal, al estudio de la vida cotidiana global de los cuidadores, que se plasma en la distribución de su tiempo diario en diferentes actividades. A través de estos datos es posible conocer con precisión qué impacto tiene el cuidado en la vida cotidiana de los diferentes grupos sociales. A. EL USO DEL TIEMPO DE LOS CUIDADORES Con el objetivo de conocer cómo influye el cuidado en el resto de actividades de la vida cotidiana de los cuidadores, a continuación se compara la distribución del tiempo diario en actividades (el perfil temporal) de (a) los cuidadores, (b) los exentos o no cuidadores (quienes también conviven con personas dependientes, pero no cuidan) y (c) la población general (quienes no viven con personas dependientes). Las principales diferencias en el uso del tiempo de estas tres poblaciones se hallan en el trabajo remunerado y no remunerado (Figura 8.6. y Tabla 8.1.): los cuidadores dedican menos de una hora diaria de media a trabajo pagado y más de seis horas diarias a trabajo no remunerado (incluyendo cuidado). Para ellos, el cuidado informal supone un promedio del 27% del total de trabajo no remunerado realizado durante el día. Los exentos dedican más de cuatro horas diarias a trabajo remunerado y menos de dos horas a actividades domésticas. La población general dedica aproximadamente el mismo tiempo a ambos tipos de trabajo (algo más de tres horas).
