that interpreted recent events for contemporaries. While these names<br />

do not exhaust the historical record <strong>of</strong> the period, they surely dominate it.<br />

Just as the emperor and his court permeated the conditions <strong>of</strong> these works’<br />

production and readership, so, through them, the court continues implicitly<br />

to influence our understanding <strong>of</strong> their era.<br />
