Leo’s expedition against the Vandals in 468, imperial finances never lapsed<br />

into the downward spiral they did in the west, and the eastern government<br />

and its armies were able to continue functioning with a sufficient degree <strong>of</strong><br />

effectiveness. This underlying economic strength <strong>of</strong> the eastern empire is<br />

further highlighted by Anastasius’ demonstration <strong>of</strong> what could be<br />

achieved through prudent management <strong>of</strong> the treasury. By the end <strong>of</strong> his<br />

reign, therefore, although continuing ecclesiastical controversy gave cause<br />

for concern, the eastern empire was in most other respects in a position to<br />

face the future with considerable optimism.<br />
