reduction in taxation in Achaea, authorized in October 424 (C.Th. xi.1.33),<br />

was a consequence <strong>of</strong> the province’s imperial contacts.<br />

Possession <strong>of</strong> philosophers and an empress made Athens a little different,<br />

but its development was not out <strong>of</strong> line with that <strong>of</strong> other provincial cities.<br />

The inscriptions <strong>of</strong> Corinth from the fifth and sixth century reveal a wide<br />

range <strong>of</strong> activities: agriculture, including goatherds, pheasant-rearing and<br />

market gardening, trade, including tailors, cobblers and furriers, and the<br />

retinue and support services required by the presence <strong>of</strong> the provincial governor<br />

– there is even a graffito by two <strong>of</strong> the praetorian prefect’s bucellarii<br />

asking for divine help in their release form imprisonment. Smaller provincial<br />

towns naturally produce very few inscriptions, and the few that record pr<strong>of</strong>essions<br />

are dominated by the church. 73 Athens was not immune to the<br />
