A series <strong>of</strong> aisled tetraconch and related churches was built in the eastern<br />

provinces between the later fifth and the mid sixth century. These had an<br />

inner chamber defined by colonnades, surrounded by an ambulatory.<br />

Churches <strong>of</strong> this design have been found in the provincial capitals <strong>of</strong><br />

Apamea, Amida, Rusafa and Bostra, as well as in the cities <strong>of</strong> Seleucia Pieria,<br />
