columns supporting the lateral arcades, this church has widely spaced piers which open up the space<br />

were built in the fifth century at the Lateran cathedral in Rome, in the<br />

sixth century at St Sophia’s cathedral in Constantinople (Fig. 59), at<br />

Marseilles and at the pilgrimage churches <strong>of</strong> St John at Ephesus (Fig. 57),<br />

St Symeon Stylites (Qal�at Sim�an) near Antioch (Fig. 62) and St Menas<br />

near Alexandria. The two built for the orthodox and Arian cathedrals at<br />

Ravenna are still elaborately decorated with mosaic. The two baptisteries<br />
