were reinforced in the late 440s by the construction <strong>of</strong> Long Walls, which<br />

ran from the Black Sea to Selymbria on the Sea <strong>of</strong> Marmara; another long<br />

wall was built at the Isthmus <strong>of</strong> Corinth, to deny access to the Peloponnese,<br />

and the defences at Thermopylae were probably also strengthened at this<br />

time. The administration <strong>of</strong> the Illyrian prefecture was moved from<br />

Sirmium to Thessalonica, which was provided in the early 440s with a<br />

massive set <strong>of</strong> walls that are largely extant (see Fig. 22); in due course these<br />
