DEPARTMENT OF BUSINESS AND INDUSTRY - The department administers its programs and regulatory activities in a manner that provides prompt and<br />

efficient service to the public and regulated entities.<br />

Department <strong>Budget</strong> Highlights:<br />

1. Stabilize the Housing Market - Business & Industry will utilize funds from the Nat'l<br />

Mortgage Settlement to stabilize the housing market, address consumer issues thru a<br />

mortgage refinance/retention program, incr compliance/enforcement and licensing activities<br />

in Real Estate and Mort Lending, and create a Consumer Affairs Section.<br />

2. Relocate theTaxicab Authority - The Taxicab Authority requests funds to relocate the<br />

Las Vegas office to a development near the airport. The new location is centrally conducive<br />

to the constituents served by the Taxicab Authority.<br />

3. Increase Safety Inspectors Pay - Due to a significant difference in pay between private<br />

and public safety inspectors, recruiting and retaining experienced/qualified inspectors is<br />

difficult. The division is requesting a 10 percent increase for Safety Inspectors, with<br />

adjustments for compaction issues in the supervisory staff.<br />

4. Invest in Labor Technology - To maintain databases utilized by the agency to ensure<br />

there is no disruption in service to its constituents, the Labor Commission is requesting to<br />

make technology investments to bring its network server system current.<br />

5. Mortgage Fraud Enforcement Program - Mortgage Fraud Enforcement activities will<br />

continue with the restoration or addition of staff to perform compliance, enforcement, or<br />

licensing activities from National Mortgage Settlement funds.<br />

6. Restore Real Estate Staff - Real Estate activities relating to compliance, enforcement, and<br />

licensing will continue with the restoration or addition of staff to perform these activities<br />

from National Mortgage Settlement funds.<br />

7. Implement a Home Refinance/Retention Program - The Director' Office will<br />

implement a program using a portion of the National Mortgage Settlement funds. A<br />

Consumer Affairs section will be restored in the Director's Office budget account and a<br />

Department wide Administrative Law Judge (ALJ) will be added.<br />
