Beijing, <strong>Peking</strong> <strong>University</strong>, Sept.19, 2005: New York Governor Mr. George.E.Pataki<br />

delivered a speech on ―Economic Development, Energy and Environment‖ in the 20th<br />

anniversary celebration <strong>of</strong> Economics School in Ying Jie Exchange Center. <strong>PKU</strong><br />

president Xu Zhihong, Li Yansong, director <strong>of</strong> Ministry <strong>of</strong> International Co-operation and<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>. Sun Qixiang, associate dean <strong>of</strong> Economics attended together with about 300<br />

students from <strong>PKU</strong> and Tsing Hua <strong>University</strong>.<br />

Governor Pataki briefly introduced New York‘s economic development, esp. the part <strong>of</strong><br />

hi—tech R&D. He said that a hi-tech project worthy one billion dollars will strengthen New<br />

York‘s influences on global economy involving the giants like IBM, Kodak and Dell.<br />

As for relations between economic development and environmental protection and<br />

energy exploration, Mr. Pataki insisted economy should not develop at the expense <strong>of</strong><br />

environment, and vice versa. He believed that the key solution to energy shortage and<br />

environmental contamination was the investment in alternative energy. He also took<br />

New York‘s report on hi-tech advancement as an example, which included the project <strong>of</strong><br />

energy exploration, a project that can supply many new jobs.<br />

Mr. Pataki answered students‘ questions <strong>of</strong> many fields, on economic development,<br />

environmental protection, Sino-US trade, security and so on. He suggested China adopt<br />

effective policies to improve transportation, like constructing subway and encouraging<br />

citizens to use energy-saving cars.<br />
