Xu Zhihong Visited PKU Laboratory

Peking University, Beijing, Mar. 22nd, 2006: Peking University President Xu
Zhihong, together with Wu Zhipan, vice Secretary of the Standing Committee of the
Communist Party, and vice President Ju Chuanjin visited PKU Laboratory Animal
Center yesterday morning.
They also had a general idea of the quadrumana research by PKU Molecular
Medicine Research Center supported by the Laboratory Animal Center.
The laboratory has been built according to the minimum standard so that it can
operate at a low cost. Associate professor Zhu Desheng, director of the center,
introduced that the laboratory has passed the relative national standard certification
and is among the world‘s top level.
President Xu pointed out that experimentation on animals is an indispensable means
of promoting the development of sciences, and we should memorize those animals
that sacrifice for human being‘s benefit. We should respect life and treat the
experimentation with a sense of responsibility.
Experts of the center suggested to President Xu that PKU should strengthen the
cooperation with provinces that have a large resource of quadrumana such as
Yunnan Province. At present, developed countries are competing for quadrumana
resources. China should make laws to protect laboratory animal resources.
After the visit, professor Cheng Heping of PKU Molecular Medicine Research Center
made a report to President Xu and other leaders. President Xu said that PKU should
establish a macroscopic management committee of laboratory animal to help
coordinate and realize the resource sharing among relative departments and
institutes.
PKU Laboratory Animal Center was established on April 12th last year. It is a key
item invested by the ―985 Project‖, namely ―Project of Establishing the World‘s Best
Universities‖. Its role is to meet the laboratory animal demand of PKU Life Science
Department, Department of Psychology, College of Chemistry and Molecular
