Sub-Forum Series (7): Philosophy<br />

<strong>PKU</strong> <strong>News</strong>, Beijing, Aug 25th, 2004: The fifth and sixth panel sessions <strong>of</strong> philosophy<br />

forum continued this morning. Seven scholars delivered lectures in the forum and<br />

some other scholars gave supplement and expressed their own opinions.<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>. Roger Ames from <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Hawaii started the panel session with his<br />

speech on Confucian Harmony as Creatio In Situ. Pr<strong>of</strong>. Zhao Dunhua, the dean <strong>of</strong><br />

the philosophy department <strong>of</strong> <strong>Peking</strong> <strong>University</strong> gave comments on Pr<strong>of</strong>. Roger<br />

Ames‘s essay in a different perspective afterwards. He also compared the ancient<br />

Greek philosophy with traditional Chinese philosophy.<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>. Melville Stewart, who is also a visiting pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> philosophy department <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Peking</strong> <strong>University</strong>, gave his lecture under the topic <strong>of</strong> Suffering and Theodicies East<br />

and West. Pr<strong>of</strong>. Stewart once gave the students <strong>of</strong> <strong>Peking</strong> <strong>University</strong> theology<br />

lessons such as the problems <strong>of</strong> evil. Today he focused on suffering from both the<br />

Confucian tradition and the Christian Tradition, and Pr<strong>of</strong>. Xing Taotao gave some<br />

comments on the essay. After the four lectures some scholars raised questions to<br />

speakers and they have some meaningful discussions.<br />

The last panel session was hosted by Tang Yijie, Pr<strong>of</strong>. Guo Qiyong talked about the<br />

term ―rite‖ and modern way <strong>of</strong> life and dialogues between civilizations. Pr<strong>of</strong>. Kenneth<br />

Inada gave a speech on the basis <strong>of</strong> the Chinese Philosophical Dialogue. Pr<strong>of</strong>. Lai<br />

Pinchao gave some comments on reconsidering the clash between the Christian and<br />

Confucian views on human nature, which is presented in an ecological perspective.<br />
