Marathons usually take place on roads and can also have either the same start and<br />

finish marks or different ones. During the competition, there must be markers on the<br />

side <strong>of</strong> the road informing which <strong>of</strong> the distance, and there must be a stand that<br />

provides drinks every 5 km. Between every two drink stands there must be a water<br />

fountain, having either drinking water or tap water. Except for the stands set up for<br />

the race, athletes cannot obtain drinks from any other source.<br />

Since the introduction <strong>of</strong> the marathon in the 1896 1st Olympics, this competition<br />

was widely spread all around the world. The United States held the Boston Marathon<br />

since 1987 annually until today, which has made it one <strong>of</strong> the world‘s longest running<br />

marathons. There are also other well-known marathons such as those held in Berlin,<br />

Germany and London, England. Worthwhile to be known, the marathon is spreading<br />

quickly in China also. During October <strong>of</strong> every fall, many athletes from China and<br />

abroad take part in the Beijing marathon, also many students from <strong>PKU</strong> also run.<br />

Xiamen, Shanghai and other cities have also held similar activities.<br />
