Japanese Diplomat Lectured on ODA

Peking University, Beijing, March 17th, 2005: Japanese counselor gave a detailed
explanation of its Official Development Assistance (ODA) in China in a lecture
yesterday to a pack of campus audience more than expected.
Gao Jianbo, the counsellor of Economic Department of Japanese embassy, replaced
Minister Mr. Keiji Ide, the original lecturer to address this lecture, which has attracted
many students from other departments other than the School of International
Relationship.
Because of the change, he was not very well prepared, said Gao, however he still
gave up a clear introduction of the ODA in China. To illustrate the points, he gave out
every audience at present several delicate handout.
After introducing the present situation and the major field of ODA in China, Gao
spoke of the current disputes in media on the possible changes of ODA policies. He
juestified the possibility of the change of policies by explaining the current economic
situation of Japan and China.
In terms of media and in response to student‘s questions, Gao said he was ―much
shocked‖ by the overdone news coverage. He said many of the opinion are not
based on fact, and he wishes the people of both countries could truly communicate
and understand every aspect of ODA.
Professor Li Hanmei of the School of International Relationship commented after
Gao‘s speech that despite the lack of friendly atmosphere, China‘s central
government appraises high on ODA, and in future, there should be more cooperation
in various forms between the two countries.
The lecture was hold by the Peking Youth Diplomacy Association.
