Symposium on Environmental Science
and Technology Held at PKU by the
Department of Science, Technology and
Standards of SEPA

Peking University, Feb. 20, 2008: Department of Science, Technology and
Standards (STS) of SEPA held a symposium on environmental Science and
Technology on 22nd February at PKU. Director-General of Department of STS Zhao
Yingming, Executive Vice President of PKU Lin Jianhua, Academician Tang Xiaoyan
from College of Environmental Sciences and Engineering, PKU, Professor Ye
Wenhu, Director of College of Environmental Science and Engineering Zhang
Yuanhang were present.
Executive Vice President Lin Jianhua pointed out that PKU should make its own
contributions to China‘s development on its adventure to a world-class-university, by
carrying out more cooperation with relevant government agencies to participate in
the country‘s development and providing high-quality human resources for society.
He also expressed the hope that more collaborations would be carried out between
the two parties.
Director-General Zhao Yingming gave an introduction about general situation of
Department of STS, overall approach, science and technology innovation projects,
environmental protection standards formulation project, environmental technology
management system building project, implementation measures etc. He said that in
order to address the environmental problems, national environmental protection
system, universities and Chinese Academy of Science should strive to promote the
science and technology based approach to support environmental protection by
working closely to facilitate communication, strengthen cooperation, enhance
scientific decision making, and building scientific coordination as well as capacity
building platforms.
Director Zhang Yuanhang presented an in-depth introduction about the history of the
college, the features and advantages of environmental majors at PKU, and the
interdependence of environmental sciences and other colleges. He hopes that, by
unleashing the respective potential of the two sides and strengthening cooperation,
the work of Department of STS can facilitate and, meanwhile, the development of the
