Prof. Lucas also made a brief introduction of the University of Oxford, including its
history, academic discipline, faculty strength, international students, libraries and so
on. He compared the strength of Oxford with other leading world-class universities
including Harvard, Yale and Princeton, but not PKU. Obviously, PKU still has a long
way to go to stand side by side to these universities. However, when asked what
impressed him most at PKU, this PKU honorable doctor commended the high
research quality of PKU and he believed PKU would become more international in
the future.
There are also four other Professors in the Oxford delegation, including Michale
Spence, Keith Burdett and Jessica Rawson. Before Sir Colin Lucas‘ speech, Xu
Zhihong, President of PKU presented welcome remarks. He made a brief
introduction of Professor Lucas and set a high value on his academic achievements.
Further, Xu expressed the hope for more collaboration with Oxford.
Sir Colin Lucas has been Vice-Chancellor of the University of Oxford since 1997. He
is the first Oxford Vice-Chancellor to serve for seven years, following the extension of
his original four-year term of office, which has enabled him to see through a
wide-ranging reform of the University's system of governance. Sir Colin is a
specialist in the history of eighteenth-century France, principally the French
revolution. Among his publications are The Structure of the Terror (Oxford, 1973),
(with Gwynne Lewis) Beyond the Terror (Cambridge, 1983), ed. The Political Culture
of the French Revolution (Oxford, Pergamon, 1988), ed. Rewriting the French
Revolution (Oxford, 1991) as well as numerous essays and articles.
Following the prelude, there will be a series of lectures by Oxford University
Professors.
