successful Olympic Games in history. The excellent performances of volunteers
gave him a deep impression, and he voiced appreciation for their hard work. He was
also moved by the athletes‘ spirits in the Paralympic Games. He said that this
Olympic Games helped China to establish the image of a great country and would
increase China‘s influence on the world. When talked about the strategic partnership
between China and the Netherlands, he thought the relationship between the two
countries was reaching a high level that there were broad foundations for
cooperation in the areas of national economy, education, technology, world situation
and residents‘ living standards.
Dr. Balkenende is especially engaged in the field of legal work, so he especially
stressed the importance of social environment in national development. He pointed
out that as the cornerstones of a harmonious society, civilization, law and human
rights would contribute to social stability and people‘s peace life. He stressed that the
nation had the responsibility to guarantee the freedom and right of her people and
introduced the practical experiences in the Netherlands. He agreed with the idea to
establish a ―harmonious society‖ in China that the two countries could learn from
each other to enhance the national confidence and pride. Dr. Balkenende also
expressed his appreciation to the tremendous achievements gained in the past thirty
years of reform and opening up which promoted the developments of China greatly.
He believed that China would continue to develop fast in political, economical and
cultural aspects that he had full confidence for future development of China.
After the speech, students asked questions related to politics, economy and culture,
and Dr. Balkenende‘ s humorous and witty answers won thunderous applauses and
laughter. He pointed out that the developments of a country needed her people‘s
unity, support and confidence. In the mean time, country also should encourage her
people and help weak group when facing crisis.
Dr. Jan Peter Balkenende is fifty-two now, with a doctorate in Law. He served as
researcher of the Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA), a member of the Amsterdam
City Council, a member of the Parliament, the financial spokesman and former Party
Head of the CDA. He was selected as prime minister in July 2002, and re-elected
twice in May 2003 and February 2007.
