University of Victoria Delegation from
Canada Visits PKU

Peking University, Beijing, May. 8th, 2007: The Delegation of the University of
Victoria (Canada), led by the President David H Turpin, visited Peking University on
May.8th.
The President of Peking University, Xu Zhihong, along with Xia Hongwei, the
Executive Vice Director of Office of International Relations, met the delegation and
had a warm conversation on enhancing the exchange in educational field between
the two universities.
President Xu first welcomed the delegation to PKU and briefly introduced the
development of Chinese Colleges and Universities. He said, Chinese government
attaches great importance to the development of higher education, and lists
improving higher educational quality as one of the three key points in the 11th
Five-Year Plan of the national educational business development. With the support
of the government, PKU had a rapid development in the past. Then, President Xu
gave a brief introduction on PKU international exchange and cooperation. He said,
China National Scholarship Management Committee offered financial aid to more
than 2000 Chinese aboard students annually, and 200-300 PKU students benefit
from that each year.
President Turpin declared his willingness to exchange on aboard students studying
in University of Victoria, and highly appraised the behavior of Chinese students
there. Detailedly enquiring the selection process of PKU abroad students, he hoped
students from more schools and colleges are capable to study in University of
Victoria., especially those major in natural science. Since University of Victoria is one
of the early universities that developed cooperation with China, President Turpin
gave voice to his hopes for more close cooperation with PKU in future.
It is reported that, before the visit to PKU, the delegation had met Zhou Ji, the
Minister of China Ministry of Education, and exchanged views on expanding the
cooperation in certain fields with China.
