Peking University, Beijing, Nov. 17th, 2005: Harvard professor Tu Wei-min and EU Senator
Gianni Vattimu continue their philosophical dialogue of ―Toward a Dialogical Civilization:
Identity, Difference and Harmony‖ in Overseas Exchange Center at Peking University
yesterday afternoon.
Mr. Vattimu began his speech by defining the metaphysical system of modern philosophy as
emphasizing difference, uncertainty and acentralism. Mr. Tu interacted by pointing out the
similarity between the key words of the topic ―identity, difference and harmony‖ and the
Confucian idea of valuing harmony instead of uniformity.
The audience raised questions about the Chinese youth‘s alienation of the traditional culture,
the basis of the dialogue between the East and the West and the difficulties in the comparative
research of eastern and western philosophies, which were answered in great details by the
two experts.
Mr. Tu praised the meeting as extremely successful, which not only meant the dialogue
between Mr. Vattimu and him but also the interaction between the audience and them. He was
confident in the success of their next dialogue in Tohoku University in Japan before long.
Tu Wei-min met Vattimu two years ago on a meeting held by UNESCO in Seoul. They became
friends despite their different research fields. This incident helped bring out this dialogue
between them, which served as a significant event for 2005 Beijing Forum.
