北京大学英语新闻网/Peking University News might ask ―if the illegal immigrants are Irish, Canadians or English, would that be such an issue‖. ―So I would say the connection between illegal immigration and one major ethnic group is a significant issue,‖ Glaze emphasized. The other significant issue which is permanent and has been present for so long is the issue of the economic and educational backwardness of blacks and how to interpret it. It was interpreted by James Watson, an international Noble Prize scientist, who said in an interview in England that he would not be optimistic about the future of Africa because all have shown the Africans are inferior intellectually, which created a tremendous storm. ―In fact, he was describing a reality, because in normal intelligence tests blacks rate low, which can be explained in terms of discriminatory aspect of the tests or in terms of heritage of backwardness which is to be overcome,‖ Glazer said. Watson won the Noble Prize in Physiology and Medicine in 1962 for his work in genetics and he created a terrific uproar. ―The most difficult issue is the reality of this educational and therefore economic backwardness and the question of how we treat it and discuss it,‖ Glazer remarked. Nathan Glazer, 84, is a renowned American sociologist, who taught at UC Berkeley and Harvard University. He is a domestic policy neoconservative, editor of the defunct policy journal The Public Interest, and formerly a frequent contributor to The New Republic.
