Mr. Min Weifang Attended the Sodality
of PKU and Tsinghua in North
Carolina

Peking University, Beijing, November 21, 2006: On the afternoon of Nov. 4, nearly
one hundred schoolfellows of Peking University (PKU) and Tsinghua University held
the 2006 sodality in the MCNC auditoria of Research Triangle Park in North Carolina.
Secretary of the CPC committee of PKU, Mr. Min Weifang who was visiting there,
attended the sodality and delivered a lecture.
Dr. Yu Shaocai, President of Alumni Association of North Carolina from PKU, and
Mr. Zhang Guohui, President of Alumni Association of North Carolina from Tsinghua,
addressed everyone and introduced the Alumni Association to schoolfellows. Later,
Professor Liu Guoen, Director of Sanitation Economy and Administration
Department of PKU gave a lecture titled ―Harmonious Development and Realizing
Everybody‘s Health‖, and introduced the Global Heath Forum of PKU-NCU (North
Carolina university).
Mr. Min said that schoolfellows are an unique precious wealth of universities. During
the 18 years since he took office at PKU, visiting overseas alumni has been one of
the most important and happiest things for him. Then he introduced the decision of
constructing a harmonious socialism society by the 6th session of the 16th CPC
National Conference. He noted that with the support of the Government and other
sources, PKU has gained great achievements in a variety of aspects including, for
example, teaching, research work and infrastructure construction.
In May, 1998, Mr.Jiang Zemin, in a speech delivered on the celebration of the
centennial anniversary of PKU, brought forward the idea of making PKU a world top
university. Since then, ―Constructing the Top University‖ has become an affair of
state. Mr. Min pointed out that PKU with all its potentialities, has been preparing for
this goal, following the ideas of Mr. Cai Yuanpei, the former president of PKU, who
had a deep understanding of international education from a global perspective.
According to Mr. Min, strategies have been made by PKU to build a top university.
When talking about a recent listing of PKU within the top 20 universities of the world
by British ―Times Higher Education Supplement‖, Mr. Min said that the listing is a
good illustration that universities of China have been gradually recognized and
