Cai Tongyi, Professor, Doctoral supervisor, Commissioner of the expert panel of
Beijing Olympic Food Safety, Consultant of National Food and Nutrition Consulting
Committee, Vice-chairman of China Green Food Association, Standing Director of
China Institute of Food Science and Technology, Director of Beijing Society of Food
Science, member of Chinese Science Committee in Danone Nutrition Center of
France.
In 1992, Professor Cai was conferred the honor of ―Outstanding Young or
Middle-aged Expert‖ by Ministry of Agriculture. He once won the First-class Award of
National Technological Advancement, reputed as ―Significant Contributor‖.
As the saying goes, ―Food is the first necessity of the people‖. Indeed, food is the
foundation for the success of Olympics. Food is as important as the construction of
Olympic venue, comprehensive ecological improvement and meteorological control.
It is expected that Beijing is supposed to meet the catering needs of 270,000
registered personnel from over 200 countries and regions during the Games.
Besides, Beijing also has to provide catering services for about 7 million audiences
for 60 days. According to experts‘ estimation, the Olympic Village alone will consume
75000 liters of milk, 330 tons of fruits and 131 tons of meat during the Games.
How to make sure that athletes, coaches, officers and journalists from all over the
world can have absolutely safe food during the Games? With this question in mind,
Science Times interviewed Professor Cai Tongyi, commissioner of the expert panel
of 2008 Beijing Olympic Food Safety Committee.
