Pennsylvania Pr<strong>of</strong>essors Talked About<br />

<strong>Peking</strong> <strong>University</strong>, Beijing, March 8th, 2005:Jerry Murphy, visiting pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Penn<br />

GSE, expressed his understanding <strong>of</strong> ‗leader‘ in his presentation ―The Cult <strong>of</strong><br />

Charisma and World Class Schools‖ —who <strong>of</strong>ten work behind the scenes with others<br />

and lead through the creation <strong>of</strong> innovative organization with the capacity to learn,<br />

rather than an overemphasis to rely primarily on charismatic leaders to create world<br />

class schools.<br />

In this <strong>Peking</strong>-Pennsylvania GSE talks (graduate school <strong>of</strong> education), Pr<strong>of</strong>. Murphy,<br />

former dean GSE in Harvard, analyzed the reason <strong>of</strong> the cult <strong>of</strong> charisma in<br />

education, mainly for the high expectations <strong>of</strong> educational work since the human<br />

history, for school goals towards universal pr<strong>of</strong>iciency, for the challenging gap<br />

between the current schools‘ performance and high expectations in new century.<br />

Susan Fuhrman, dean <strong>of</strong> Penn GSE, said they encouraged more students to go out<br />

for a new market, different from Harvard which emphasized pr<strong>of</strong>essional practice or<br />

from <strong>Peking</strong> <strong>University</strong> which prefer to be more basically all-round.<br />

In Pr<strong>of</strong>. Fuhrman‘ speech <strong>of</strong> ―trends in education policy‖, she pointed out the great<br />

significance <strong>of</strong> NCLB (No Child Left Behind) project launched to narrow the growing<br />

social disparity.<br />

She also concerned that testing and curriculum is still considered as the most<br />

important assessment about students.<br />

Besides that, the other two challenges were listed: the matter <strong>of</strong> capacity concerning<br />

students‘ skill-oriented mindset and teachers‘ seniority-based promotion, resources<br />

disparity between poor states and rich ones.<br />

<strong>Peking</strong> <strong>University</strong> has started EDD program cooperation co-training doctors in<br />

advanced educational administration since 2004 with Pennsylvania, a member <strong>of</strong> Ivy<br />

League who has a good reputation in graduate school <strong>of</strong> education.<br />
