Biographer Philip Short Talking about
―MAO A LIFE‖ at PKU

Peking University, Beijing, Mar. 29th, 2004: World famous biographer, Philip Short,
who is also the author of the book ―Mao a Life‖, gave a report with the topic of ―Mao,
His Legacy, and China Today‖ in School of Foreign Languages of Peking University
on the evening of March 29th.
Philip Short was born in 1945 and worked for BBC for 25 years. He was in charge of
BBC Reporter Station in China between 1977 and 1981. As a reporter stationed in
foreign countries, Philip Short has been paying much attention to men of the time of
different counties. In order to write ―Mao a Life‖, he consulted a great deal of
materials, interviewed with a large number of related people, and tracked the
revolution lands along with Mao Zedong‘s activity trail in his life. The English edition
of ―Mao a Life‖ was first published in Britain and the Chinese edition was published in
the end of 2003.
Philip Short brought the Chinese edition of ―Mao a Life‖ to the conference and
explained further part of its content in the two-hour long report. The special angle of
view of Philip Short in Chinese roles aroused the interests of the teachers and the
students. After the report, Philip Short and the attendants held a communication and
discussion for another 2 hours.
The conference was hosted by Zhao Baisheng, Dean of World Biography Center. In
his opinion, it is of special meaning for foreign scholars to research Chinese figures
and their international view can be used for reference for Chinese research, and it is
also helpful to introduce more Chinese figures to the world.
