Mike Moore is former New Zealand Prime Minister and Former Director-General <strong>of</strong><br />

the World Trade Organization. He was born in Whakatane in 1949. Starting from the<br />

very bottom, he was once a social worker and inspector <strong>of</strong> a trade association. Later<br />

Moore became the youngest Member <strong>of</strong> Parliament ever elected when he won the<br />

Eden seat in 1972.<br />

From 1984 to 1990, Moore was New Zealand Minister <strong>of</strong> Overseas Trade and<br />

Marketing and Chairman <strong>of</strong> the Cabinet Economic Development and Employment<br />

Committee. From 1984 to 1987, he was Minister <strong>of</strong> Tourism, Sport and Recreation,<br />

and was Minister in Charge <strong>of</strong> Publicity from 1984 to 1988. Moore was Minister for<br />

the America‘s Cup from 1988 to 1989, and concurrently Minister <strong>of</strong> External<br />

Relations and Trade, and Deputy Minister <strong>of</strong> Finance, from 1988 to 1990. In 1990, he<br />

was Prime Minster <strong>of</strong> New Zealand and also acted as Minister <strong>of</strong> Foreign Affairs.<br />

From 1990 to 1993, Moore acted as Leader <strong>of</strong> the Labor Party and Opposition. Then<br />

from 1993 to 1999 he was Opposition Spokesperson on Foreign Affairs and<br />

Overseas Trade. He was Director-General <strong>of</strong> the World Trade Organization from<br />

1999 to 2002. And he has been an Adjunct Pr<strong>of</strong>essor at La Trobe <strong>University</strong> since<br />

2003.<br />

Moore has received numerous awards, including the New Zealand 1990<br />

Commemoration Medal and the 1999 Order <strong>of</strong> New Zealand, New Zealand‘s highest<br />

honor. In 2000, Lincoln <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> New Zealand conferred him an Honorary<br />

Doctorate <strong>of</strong> Commerce. In 2005, La Trobe <strong>University</strong> also conferred him an<br />

Honorary Doctorate.<br />

Moore is a prolific writer; his main publications include The Added Value Economy,<br />

Hard Labour, Fighting for New Zealand, Children <strong>of</strong> the Poor, and A World without<br />

Walls, to name a few.<br />

Moore and China‘s Entry into WTO<br />

Moore enjoys a friendly relationship with China and has always been paying close<br />

attention to China‘s economic development and social construction. He was also<br />

very supportive <strong>of</strong> China‘s entry into the World Trade Organization and contributed a<br />

lot to China‘s accession. During his tenure as Director-General <strong>of</strong> the organization,<br />
