Environmental Celebrities Make a
Dialogue on Leapfrogging Development
of China

Peking University, Beijing, May 29th, 2004:Before the coming of World Environment
Day on June 5, International Environmental Forum on Leapfrogging Development in
China was held in Yingjie Exchange Center of Peking University from May 29 to 30.
Famous experts and celebrities in environmental field from home and abroad came
to discuss the topics on exploring a leapfrogging way for China, and also share the
successful experience of making good balance between economy, society and
environment of multinationals and local enterprises.
The excellent speeches presented by those experts are the sparkles of this forum.
Xie Zhenhua, Minister of SEPA, China, Professor Chi Huisheng, Vice President of
Peking University, Xia Kunbao, Coordinator of UNEP China Office, Professor Qu
Geping, president of China Environmental Protection Foundation, Denis Hayes,
President and CEO of Bullitt Foundation, founder of the Earth Day, member of the
Board of Directors of World Resources Institute, Maurice Strong, under Secretary
and Special Advisor to the Secretary-General of the United Nations; Secretary
General of the 1992 U.N. Conference on the Environment and Development and
1972 UN Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment all attended the
opening ceremony and delivered a thematic speech.
The topics of this forum focused on the study of environmental technology market
and strategy of environmental industry. Mr. Denis Hayes considered sunpower as
the most important leapfrog technology. He said the sustainable development would
also face the energy shortage as many other countries and should pay attention to
explore the sustainable energy and promote the leapfrogging development of China.
Lester Brown, President of Earth Policy Institute; former president and chair of World
Watch Institute, presented that humankind need a sustainable development mode to
rescue a planet under stress and a civilization in trouble. He thought there‘s a must
to make a worldwide mobilization and cooperation to realize the steady control of
population and climate. Alan Brewster, deputy dean of School of Forestry and
Environmental Studies, explained that technological 'leapfrogging' would play a
major role in helping China move toward sustainable development.
