<strong>Peking</strong> <strong>University</strong>, Beijing, May 29th, 2004:Before the coming <strong>of</strong> World Environment<br />

Day on June 5, International Environmental Forum on Leapfrogging Development in<br />

China was held in Yingjie Exchange Center <strong>of</strong> <strong>Peking</strong> <strong>University</strong> from May 29 to 30.<br />

Famous experts and celebrities in environmental field from home and abroad came<br />

to discuss the topics on exploring a leapfrogging way for China, and also share the<br />

successful experience <strong>of</strong> making good balance between economy, society and<br />

environment <strong>of</strong> multinationals and local enterprises.<br />

The excellent speeches presented by those experts are the sparkles <strong>of</strong> this forum.<br />

Xie Zhenhua, Minister <strong>of</strong> SEPA, China, Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Chi Huisheng, Vice President <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Peking</strong> <strong>University</strong>, Xia Kunbao, Coordinator <strong>of</strong> UNEP China Office, Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Qu<br />

Geping, president <strong>of</strong> China Environmental Protection Foundation, Denis Hayes,<br />

President and CEO <strong>of</strong> Bullitt Foundation, founder <strong>of</strong> the Earth Day, member <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Board <strong>of</strong> Directors <strong>of</strong> World Resources Institute, Maurice Strong, under Secretary<br />

and Special Advisor to the Secretary-General <strong>of</strong> the United Nations; Secretary<br />

General <strong>of</strong> the 1992 U.N. Conference on the Environment and Development and<br />

1972 UN Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment all attended the<br />

opening ceremony and delivered a thematic speech.<br />

The topics <strong>of</strong> this forum focused on the study <strong>of</strong> environmental technology market<br />

and strategy <strong>of</strong> environmental industry. Mr. Denis Hayes considered sunpower as<br />

the most important leapfrog technology. He said the sustainable development would<br />

also face the energy shortage as many other countries and should pay attention to<br />

explore the sustainable energy and promote the leapfrogging development <strong>of</strong> China.<br />

Lester Brown, President <strong>of</strong> Earth Policy Institute; former president and chair <strong>of</strong> World<br />

Watch Institute, presented that humankind need a sustainable development mode to<br />

rescue a planet under stress and a civilization in trouble. He thought there‘s a must<br />

to make a worldwide mobilization and cooperation to realize the steady control <strong>of</strong><br />

population and climate. Alan Brewster, deputy dean <strong>of</strong> School <strong>of</strong> Forestry and<br />

Environmental Studies, explained that technological 'leapfrogging' would play a<br />

major role in helping China move toward sustainable development.<br />
