Professor Su Rongyu, researcher of The Institute for the History of Natural Sciences,
CAS, is a renowned expert in the field of Chinese cultural legacy. Beginning with the
study of bronzes in his early career, he has been to many countries like Germany
and the United States as a visiting professor. Recently, the journalist had an
interview with him and asked him to make some elaboration on the protection and
management of heritage.
Science Times: As an expert at the study of cultural legacy, how do you define
cultural legacy? What is the situation of Chinese cultural legacy?
Su Rongyu: Cultural legacy is usually described as significant and representative
historic relics and remains, social customs, arts and crafts, and stable performance,
etc. Historic relics and remains belong to tangible cultural legacy, also known as
material cultural legacy; the rest belong to intangible cultural legacy, also known as
non-material cultural legacy.
Tangible cultural legacy can be subdivided into two categories: mobile and immobile
legacy. Mobile cultural legacy mainly refer to historic relics of the mankind, such as
jade ware, chinaware and horn implement, classified according to materials. Such
heritage is mainly collected in museums (or distributed among the folks); immobile
cultural legacy is remains and properties left by human activities, including ancient
architecture and construction relics such as city walls, towns, palaces and temples.
Intangible cultural legacy is categorized differently in different countries. Generally
speaking, they include festival ceremony, oral literature, folk story-telling, traditional
craftwork and folk arts, etc. I believe both tangible and intangible cultural legacy
came into being as a result of traditional craftwork. Nowadays, cultural sites have
been attached much importance to globally. The purpose of such practice is to adjust
the disconnection of former categorization and to emphasize the interrelation
between man and nature, tangible and intangible heritage, thus promoting a dynamic
trend of cultural legacy.
