北京大学英语新闻网/Peking University News
At the beginning of his speech, on behalf of the South Korea government and its
people, Mr. Lee again expressed his grief and concern for the earthquake victims and
their families. Then he introduced his experience in striving to achieve success in
business and politics, which he himself thought was nothing else but great efforts
driven by a sense of social responsibility. As the mayor of Seoul when the 1998
Olympic Games was held in the city, he expressed his wish for the success of the
2008 Beijing Olympics, and provided advice based on the experience of Seoul on the
Olympic environmental problems.
Lee also pointed out that the history of cultural communication between China and
South Korea is very long. Today, South Korea is catching on a ―Chinese craze‖;
Confucianism and such Chinese classic novels as The Romance of the Three
Kingdoms are also popular in the country. Because of the shared historical and
cultural traditions, interest base and source of cooperation, he believed that the
relation of the two countries could be raised to a new level. Not only in economics,
but also in politics and diplomacy, a strategic cooperation partnership should be
developed.
At the end of his speech, Lee expressed a wish to increase government-supported
communications between the Chinese and South Korean young generations such as
scholarship exchange programs, in order to help the young people improve
themselves from mutual learning. He also encouraged PKU students to strive for their
dreams and never give up in front of challenges and difficulties.
