Prof. D.N. Payne from University of
Southampton Visits PKU

Peking University, Beijing, Oct. 16th, 2007: Prof. D.N. Payne from University of
Southampton visited PKU on Oct. 11th, accompanied by his wife Ms. Hua Ping.
Prof. D.N. Payne is a Commander of the Order of the British Empire, academicians
of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering, foreign
figure of Russian Academy of Sciences and director of photoelectron research
center in University of Southampton. His wife Ms. Hua Ping is a researcher of the
center and president of SOTON Alumni Association China.
During his visit at PKU, D.N. Payne had a talk with Prof. Xu Anshi, director of the
Lab. on Local Fiber-Optic Comm. Networks & Advanced Optical Comm. Systems.
Mr. Xu introduced him the Basic conditions of the School of Information and
Engineering Sciences and their research directions and results.
D.N. Payne said that this was his first time to have a long-period visit in the mainland
since 25 years ago and it was also his first time to come to PKU. His visit here aimed
at creating more chances of collaboration with Chinese universities. He highly
appraised the creativity and devotion to knowledge of Chinese scholars and
students. When it comes to his own career, he mentioned that he loved scientific
research and was glad to have his research results applied to factories and labs.
In the end, Mr. Xu invited Prof. D.N. Payne to visit PKU for a second time in the
future.
