University Together Set up ―The
Research Program of China and the
Asia-Pacific Area‖

Peking University, Beijing, Nov 11th, 2004: Peking University and Cornell University
reached an agreement on Nov.10th on together setting up ―the Research Program of
China and the Asia-Pacific Area‖. The president of Cornell University Jeffrey Sean
Lehman believed that universities should build up a global research network to
accomplish the great tasks which can not be easily achieved by one country alone.
Mr. Lehman pointed out that with the fast increase of the cooperation, influences and
conflicts between the different countries and nations, none of them could still remain
isolated from the world. All the famous universities in the world including Peking
University and Cornell University should come hand in hand in facing the challenges
of the world and cultivating the students with foresight toward the world in order to
enhance the further exchange and development of the human being. He was in hope
that the students taking part in the program could not only achieve success in their
studies, but also research deep into the society in China, grasp the information which
cannot be found in the book and bring their understanding to the US.
Established in 1865, Cornell University has been famous for its successful
combination of professional teaching and social practice. It has a long-term
friendship with China. Many Chinese students graduated from Cornell in the
beginning of the twentieth century, such as the famous scholar Hu Shi, Zhao Yuren
and well-known expert on bridge building Mao Yisheng, all did great contributions to
the later Chinese society.
Mr. Lehman hoped to further strengthen the long-term friendship between the two
universities during his presidency. Besides setting up the program, he also signed
the cooperation memoirs with the president of Tsinghua University confirming the
further cooperative research on a large variety of scientific subjects.
