Peking University, Beijing, Nov. 4th, 2007: The seventh, also the last, Panel Session
of ―Cultural Diversity, harmonious society and alternative modernity: New media and
social development‖, most concentrated on ―New media in historical scope‖, was
held in the VIP Room, Yingjie Exchange Center, Peking University at 9 am on
November 4th,2007.
This session included five reports, the speakers of which were all Chinese, and the
researches of them were with obvious Chinese background of culture and history.
Dr. Shi Zengzhi, Dr. Xu Jing, both from School of Journalism and Communication
(SJC), PKU, and Dr. Qiao Mu, from English School of Beijing Foreign Studies
University, presented their researches on the current effects of new media by the
analysis of cases in China. Dr. Shi talked about civic-ness reflected in recent
―internet incidents‖ and its significance; Dr. Xu stated public sphere in the new media
environment through a case study of the Shanxi black brick kiln incident and Dr. Qiao
presented the new media effect and political influence by using the method of case
analysis on SMS.
Instead of case analysis, Dr. Liu Dehuan, from SJC, PKU, showed the results of his
study on ―Getting online, reading time and catalyst‖ with a series of models. Groups
of individuals, classified in terms of the cultural level and habit to read or not, were
investigated and formulated respectively. Dr. Liu would prefer to take the research to
be a study on a complex model establishment.
The last speaker, Chen Changfeng, also from SJC, PKU, talked about ―The influence
of telegraphy on the narrative style of Chinese news writing‖, which was based on
