Olympics to be Under Construction

Peking University, Beijing, June 27th, 2004:The beginning of the evaluation of
design schemes for 2008 Beijing Olympics' table tennis stadium marks the start of
this stadium's construction stage. This table tennis stadium, to be constructed at
Peking University, will be the first stadium only for table tennis game in the history of
Olympics.
According to a press conference held at PKU on June 24th, the table tennis stadium
for 2008 Beijing Olympics, or Peking University Stadium, is located in the southeast
of the campus, with an area totaling 25300 square meters, 6000 permanent seats
and 2000 temporary seats which will be added during the 2008 Olympic Games.
After the Games, this stadium will be transformed to PKU Integrated Stadium.
Lin Junjing, vice-president of PKU, discloses that guided by the principle of
openness, fairness and transparency, design scheme for the table tennis stadium is
opened to both home and abroad designers. The best scheme, which should take
into account existing sports facility and the layout of PKU, will be chosen through
several rounds of experts' evaluation and selection.
Currently, all the schemes are being evaluated and the chosen schemes are to be
released on June 28th and 29th. The final decision is to be made in early July.
According to schedule, construction scheme for the stadium will be completed in this
September and construction work will begin later this year or early next year.
Construction of the stadium will finish by the end of 2006,and will be ready to be
used in 2007.
It is reported that Beijing Olympic Games together has four stadiums built at
university campus in the capital city. They are table tennis stadium at PKU, wrestling
stadium in China Agricultural University, judo stadium in University of Science and
Technology of Beijing, and badminton stadium in Beijing University of Technology.
