Science Times: What are the features boasted by Huazhong University of Science
and Technology regarding the cultivation of a new generation of innovative talents?
Li Peigen: As for the cultivation of a new generation of innovative talents, our
university has implemented the state plan on college students‘ innovation training,
the plan of college students scientific and technological innovation and the
comprehensive scientific research training of majors in medical sciences. In this way
the basic system and mechanism allowing the undergraduates to enter the
laboratories for research as early as appropriate have been established and
improved so that the students can embark on the research career at an early date
and their innovative spirit and capabilities get boosted, which has given rise to
diversity in the cultivation of innovative talents and the norm of active and innovative
practice. Satisfactory achievements have been made through these efforts.
At present our university has over a dozen innovation teams made up of the students
on campus and many an innovation base. Though the teams and bases differ from
each other in terms of the operation mechanism and the talent cultivation mode, they
share a lot in common in exploring for ways to cultivate innovative talents.
For instance, in this year‘s ―Innovation Cup‖ global competition sponsored by
Microsoft, our Lianchuang Team won the championship in the software design
contest (China Zone) and Chen Zhifeng, a member of this team, ranked first in the
global IT competition. This innovation team on campus was set up basically on the
students‘ own initiative and developed by the students as well. Most of the team
members have a lot of hands-on experience and very strong initiative capabilities.
The Dian Group, a talent incubator of undergraduates under the tutorial system,
headed by Professor Liu Yu from our university‘s Telecom Department represents
another model in the cultivation of innovative talents. Under the guidance of Liu Yu,
sixty to seventy undergraduates regularly engaged in the research and development
of certain projects amid which they grow robust in the sense of scientific research.
Within five years the expenditure granted to this group for scientific research
increased from 30,000 yuan in the very beginning to 1080,000 yuan in 2006. Each
year witnesses that several articles contributed by this group get published in core
journals.
Our university‘s innovation center of majors in the electrical and electronic
engineering enjoys a lot of prestige across the country. After this center‘s
establishment in 2001, the students are guided and coached to prepare for the
domestic and international competitions so that they make rapid and marked
progress in acquiring and applying knowledge. During the past few years the center
has won one special prize and 25 first prizes in the major domestic and international
