Prof. Lin Yifu Headed for World Bank

Peking University, June 2, 2008: On the afternoon of May 31, Lin Yifu, the Professor
of China Center for Economic Research (CCER) of Peking University, had left
Beijing, together with his wife Chen Yunying, to the headquarters of World Bank in
Washington to accede to the position as vice president and chief economist in World
Bank.
Professor Lin was the Deputy of the 11th National People's Congress and Vice
Chairman of All-China Federation of Industry & Commerce. He had been awarded
the title of National Advanced Worker and the national ―May 1st‖ medal. He was the
first man from the Third World who was appointed to be the Vice President and Chief
Economist of World Bank. Professor Lin should have gone to Washington at the
beginning of May as planned, but owing to the classes he taught this term, he
rescheduled the plan.
At the night of May, 30, Professor Lin finished his last class at Peking University.
Then the next day, he presided over the commencement of China Center for
Economic Research of Peking University. Wearing the academic dress, Lin
addressed the speech as the chairman for the very last time. He said:‖ It is your
commencement and mine too. Recently I count down the date with a complicated
feeling that you may all have. I kept asking myself what mode I will graduate in and
what a world I will face as I step out Peking University.‖ He called for the students to
