Pr<strong>of</strong>. Lin Yifu Headed for World Bank<br />

<strong>Peking</strong> <strong>University</strong>, June 2, 2008: On the afternoon <strong>of</strong> May 31, Lin Yifu, the Pr<strong>of</strong>essor<br />

<strong>of</strong> China Center for Economic Research (CCER) <strong>of</strong> <strong>Peking</strong> <strong>University</strong>, had left<br />

Beijing, together with his wife Chen Yunying, to the headquarters <strong>of</strong> World Bank in<br />

Washington to accede to the position as vice president and chief economist in World<br />

Bank.<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Lin was the Deputy <strong>of</strong> the 11th National People's Congress and Vice<br />

Chairman <strong>of</strong> All-China Federation <strong>of</strong> Industry & Commerce. He had been awarded<br />

the title <strong>of</strong> National Advanced Worker and the national ―May 1st‖ medal. He was the<br />

first man from the Third World who was appointed to be the Vice President and Chief<br />

Economist <strong>of</strong> World Bank. Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Lin should have gone to Washington at the<br />

beginning <strong>of</strong> May as planned, but owing to the classes he taught this term, he<br />

rescheduled the plan.<br />

At the night <strong>of</strong> May, 30, Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Lin finished his last class at <strong>Peking</strong> <strong>University</strong>.<br />

Then the next day, he presided over the commencement <strong>of</strong> China Center for<br />

Economic Research <strong>of</strong> <strong>Peking</strong> <strong>University</strong>. Wearing the academic dress, Lin<br />

addressed the speech as the chairman for the very last time. He said:‖ It is your<br />

commencement and mine too. Recently I count down the date with a complicated<br />

feeling that you may all have. I kept asking myself what mode I will graduate in and<br />

what a world I will face as I step out <strong>Peking</strong> <strong>University</strong>.‖ He called for the students to<br />
