Chancellor of Cornell Univ. Visits PKU

Beijing, Peking University, Nov. 17th, 2005: On November 15, Hunter .R. Rawlings,
the chancellor of Cornell University, lectured on 'Humanities Research in Sci-tech
Age' in Qiu Lin Auditorium. Rawlings‘s visit mainly aims at signing the agreement on
the CAPS(China Asia Pacific Studies)program with SIS (School of International
Studies).
Xu Zhihong, the president of PKU, Wang Jisi, the dean of SIS and Jia Qingguo, the
assistant dean of SIS assisted at the signing ceremony.
As to the reason for launching the CAPS program, Rawlings argued 'Both PKU and
Cornell University have the responsibility of training intellectuals for their own nation.
With the increasing importance of China in the world, the United States valued the
Sino-US relations more highly'.
The CAPS program will promote Sino-US relations and train in the field of politics,
economics and culture.
The CAPS program has rich content, which includes the studies of Chinese and
Chinese history, culture and arts as well. The students who attend the program
should devote two years to full-time Chinese studies, and because of the collapse of
linguistic obstacle, they will obtain more from the future profession related to
Sino-US relations.
To be pointed, Rawlings mentioned Hu Shi, who was once the president of PKU, as
an excellent graduate of Cornell University. Rawlings extolled Hu‘s great contribution
to the New Culture Movement (around the time of the May 4th Movement), especially
to the Vernacular Movement (1917-1919).
In addition, Rawlings also urged colleges to pay more attention to the construction of
humanities.
After speech, Rawlings will participate in Beijing Forum and visit Tsinghua University
in the coming two days.
