<strong>Peking</strong> <strong>University</strong>, Beijing, June 28, 2004: Ahmed H. Zewail, winner <strong>of</strong> the 1999<br />

Nobel Prize in chemistry, was conferred the <strong>Peking</strong> <strong>University</strong> Honorary Doctoral<br />

Degree and gave a splendid and instructive lecture this morning. Egyptian<br />

ambassador to China and previous president <strong>of</strong> <strong>Peking</strong> <strong>University</strong> Chen Jiaer<br />

attended the lecture.<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Ahmed H. Zewail was born in Egypt and won the doctor degree in the<br />

<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> Pennsylvania. Now he is the pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> California Institute <strong>of</strong><br />

Technology. He was awarded the 1999 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his studies <strong>of</strong><br />

the transition states <strong>of</strong> chemical reactions using femtosecond spectroscopy. His<br />

contributions have brought about a revolution in chemistry and adjacent sciences,<br />

since this type <strong>of</strong> investigation allows us to understand and predict important<br />

reactions.<br />

In his lecture today he narrated his academic experience both in Egypt and USA.<br />

Using lantern slides, Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Zewail shared his leading academic achievement<br />

with the students and faculty <strong>of</strong> <strong>PKU</strong>. After the lecture many students bought his<br />

autobiography with his autograph.<br />

This activity is one <strong>of</strong> the series <strong>of</strong> lectures <strong>of</strong> the ―Nobel Prize Winner's China<br />

Campus Tour‖ program initiated by <strong>Peking</strong> <strong>University</strong> this May.<br />
