progress since it put forward the grand strategy of building a world-class top
university in 1998 and an area of booming development can be expected in the near
future. Besides the substantial support from the government, the development of the
University depends more on the bounteous support from all circles of the society
while alumni makes the most precious intellectual and financial resource. Peking
University will attach even greater importance to regulating and enhancing the work
of PKUEF and PKUAA to grantee that we agglomerate each and every force to
facilitate the development of the University. Prof. Hai‘s speech proved both
informative and encouraging to alumni abroad.
Alumni Associations in North America introduced their major activities and recent
development. Due to different regions and careers, those associations held varieties
of activities and the conference provided a smooth platform for further
communication and exchange. Since the establishment of North California and
Southern California PKU Alumni Association in 1985, 12 regional alumni
associations have been established consecutively in the United States. They are
PKUAA of Michigan, PKUAA of Hawaii, Houston Alumni Association, Chicago
Alumni Association, Washington DC Alumni Association, Philadelphia Alumni
Association, New York Alumni Association, New England Alumni Association, Yale
University Alumni Association, San Diego Alumni Association, BMUAA of South
California (Beiyi), South California Alumni Association and North California Alumni
Association.
The second day‘s conference took the form of group discussion. Topics include how
to further promote profound communication between alumni associations in North
America, how to complete the organizational construction of associations in other
regions, how to enhance the website construction of PKUAAs in North America and
how to unite the alumni to contribute more to the alma mater.
Vice President Hai Wen listened carefully to the comments and suggestions and
made a concluding speech. He said: ―we will carefully study and solve the questions
gathered at this conference, continuously improve and promote service to alumni.
And we hope PKUAAs enhance the communication between alumni in each area,
carry forward the fine traditions of Beida, and contribute more to the great cause of
building Beida into a world-class university. ‖
All delegates attended the banquet held by Mr. Zhou Wenzhong, China ambassador
to the USA on Dec. 4th. Ambassador Zhou expressed ardent expectations to Peking
University Alumni Associations in his speech. ― I hope PKUAAs contact and serve
more local alumni, make continuous contributions to Peking University‘s strategy of
world-class university and make outstanding and unique influence to the
communication and friendship between the two countries.‖
