Peking University, Beijing, May 21st, 2007: On May 21st, President Richard Herman
from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) visited Peking University.
PKU President Xu Zhihong welcomed President Herman and Vice President Jesse
Delia at the Office of the President. Presidents from both universities discussed the
possible collaboration between the two universities in the future.
President Xu introduced the subject construction at PKU and the status quo of its
development. Xu said commented that both PKU and UIUC are comprehensive
universities and with a strong academic background in natural sciences. Vice
President Delia said that the cooperation between PKU and UIUC had been going on
very well in recent years. He talked about the Center for East Asian and Pacific
Studies (EAPS) that had hosted the Freeman Fellows Program for over a decade
now, bringing over 100 social scientists and humanists from China to UIUC campus
for year-long stays. President Herman said UIUC had set the model of
interdisciplinary construction all over the nation. Renowned for its natural sciences
and technology education, UIUC has also been paying much attention to the
development of humanities. Herman expressed his wishes to cooperate with
Guanghua School of Management and most of the departments of humanities at
PKU.
Founded in 1867, UIUC is a world leader in research, teaching, and public
engagement, distinguished by the breadth of its programs, broad academic
excellence, and internationally renowned faculty. UIUC alumni have earned Nobel
and Pulitzer Prizes and Olympic medals, have orbited the earth, and lead
international corporations.
