First Weiming Forum in US<br />

<strong>Peking</strong> <strong>University</strong>, Beijing, Oct. 17th, 2006: The first Weiming Forum was held in San<br />

Francisco Bay, US, in the afternoon <strong>of</strong> Oct. 7th. President <strong>of</strong> <strong>Peking</strong> <strong>University</strong> Xu<br />

Zhihong and Vice President Hai Wen delivered their speeches at the forum.<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>. Xu Zhihong made a speech named ―The Cultural Power <strong>of</strong> <strong>University</strong>‘s Spirit.‖<br />

He <strong>of</strong>fered the audience his understanding about <strong>PKU</strong>‘s spirit and introduced the<br />

idea <strong>of</strong> the fostering program at <strong>PKU</strong>. As he pointed out, the students should pay<br />

more attention to their ability rather than their academic credits, and the pr<strong>of</strong>essors<br />

should try to bring out every student‘s potentiality and maintain their individualities at<br />

the same time.<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>. Hai Wen pointed out in his speech ―The Next Twenty Years for China‘s<br />

Economy‖ that the industrialization, urbanization and market economy <strong>of</strong> China will<br />

keep on developing, and the rate <strong>of</strong> economic development will be 8%-10% due to<br />

the advantages in labor capital, market, reformation in economics and the open<br />

environment. He also talked about some problems in equity, education and<br />

government reformation.<br />

The forum was undertaken by <strong>PKU</strong> Alumni Association in North California and<br />

co-operated by <strong>PKU</strong> Education Foundation and <strong>PKU</strong> Education Foundation in US. It<br />

was free to the public, with the aim <strong>of</strong> promoting Sino-US cultural communication and<br />

connecting and serving <strong>PKU</strong> alumni and Chinese community in US. The forum will<br />

be held in other cities in US in the future.<br />
