Animation Expert Dr. Ken Newman
Delivered a Speech at PKU

Peking University, Apr. 3, 2008: On the afternoon of Apr. 2, Dr. Ken Newman form
University of Portsmouth in the United Kingdom delivered a lecture about the English
animation originality which was invited by the Institute for Cultural Industries of
Peking University. Vice Dean of the Institute for Cultural Industries Xiang Yong
presided this lecture.
According to the DSMC statistics quoted by Dr. Ken Newman, the British creative
industry reached 7.3 per cent of the national GDP in 2007. The proportion of the
originality in movie, game, television and advertising has been obviously upgraded
from 1997 to 2005.
Dr. Ken Newman explained the status of the animation in the creative industry in the
United Kingdom that it is just a skill rather than an industry. The development of
animation career may encounter several key problems, such as the sources of
funding, technical support and education system. As he said, there were half the
English top animation producers worked for Hollywood such as Tim Burton, author of
the ―Corpse Bride‖. ―What should be appreciated is that more and more English
animation practitioners are influencing and the British creative industry has reached
an unprecedented height.‖
After the lecture, Dr. Ken Newman and the students at present made pleasant
interactions and communications.
