Peking University, Beijing, Oct.24th, 2003: In the international conference under the
name of ―East Asia‘s View on World Culture‖, professor Gu zhengkun from Foreign
languages School of Peking University made a presentation on the value localization
of Chinese and Western cultures with reference to strategies for the construction of a
global culture.
Professor Gu said the key concept of culture is the views on values, especially moral
values. Then he compared the key concepts of culture between China and western
countries and concluded that Chinese traditional culture is superior because of its
altruism.
He made an investigation into general as well particular values of cultures with
regard to their respective characteristics. Particular Chinese cultural values derived
with necessity from their geographical background and historical context. He tried to
figure out a cultural logic leading to the inevitable conflict between Chinese and
western civilizations ever since 19th century. In line with this examination, he offered
some tentative policies aimed to bridge up the chasm of the said value conflict.
Professor Gu intended to place Chinese culture in a proper position in the framework
of world culture, and put forward a theory of cultural tangram in response to the
theory of cultural mergence, which is popular in both Western and Chinese academic
circles. Based on theoretical description above, he worked out some strategies for
the construction of a global culture in the near future.
