Window to the World

Peking University, Beijing, October 25, 2004: Arthur Winston, 2004 IEEE (Institute of
Electrical and Electronics Engineers) President lectured at Yingjie Communication
Center this afternoon on the topic ―IEEE: A Window to the World‖.
Winston first explained the word ―Window‖ he used in the topic of his lecture: IEEE
not only gives but also receives back information from members of IEEE worldwide,
so it serves as a window to the world. He then talked about why do people join IEEE,
including the access to technical information, stay up-to-date in technical field,
develop career opportunity, build a community of colleagues and many other values
of membership.
Today IEEE is the world‘s largest association promoting the advancement of
technology, with 360,000 members in over 150 countries. Among the 10 IEEE
regions, we are in the second largest region by the number of members and IEEE
Beijing Section, established on December 1984, is part of IEEE‘s 10th region (Asia,
Pacific Rim).
To foster technical innovation, IEEE has publications. There are 126 magazines,
journals and transactions, together with over 400 annual conference proceedings
and over 300 international conferences. It takes up 18 of the top 20 most highly cited
in electrical and electronics engineering. Winston pointed out that IEEE information
also drives hi-tech development. A recent study showed the largest percentage of
literature referenced by the top 25 IEEE‘s patenting organizations.
As for IEEE‘s standard, IEEE is a leader in developing international standards with
nearly 900 active industry standards. IEEE is enabling member careers stay
up-to-date in technical field by addressing global demand for continuing education.
Another service IEEE has is a community of colleagues, and online communities
enable global collaborations. Besides, IEEE has a number of recognitions, such as
institute level awards and medals , society awards, prize paper awards and so on.
Last but not the least, Winston made it clear the value of membership benefits for
students. Student dues are discounted in IEEE. He said: ―Of course, IEEE collects
